How a QR code works

A QR code stores characters in a square grid. Three larger squares, in three of the corners, tell the camera which way is up. The rest of the pattern holds the characters you typed, plus extra modules so a camera can still read the message when a small part of the square is dirty, torn, or covered.

This page uses medium error correction. That is the usual level for a code you print on paper. It can survive a small mark. It cannot survive a code that has been cropped, faded to yellow, or squeezed into a tiny blurry picture.

The white margin around the square is part of the code. The PNG from this page includes that margin. Leave it in place when you drop the image onto a poster, a menu, or a slide.

A phone opens a website only when the stored text is a web address. If you choose Text, the phone shows the sentence. It does not invent a link. If you choose Link and leave off https://, this page adds it. The line under the box shows the exact characters stored in the square. Read that line before you print.

Use it in this order

  1. Choose Link or Text. Link is for a page you want the phone to open. Text is for a sentence, a name, a table number, or any words that should stay words.
  2. Type it. For a link, example.com is stored as https://example.com. A sentence such as “Side door is open” stays as that sentence.
  3. Check the color. Black, dark green, navy, and dark red on white scan well. If the page says the color may not scan, pick a darker one.
  4. Scan it before you trust it. Point another phone at the preview. When the phone shows the right page or the right words, download the PNG.

What this will not do

Questions

Is this QR code generator free?

Yes. There is no account and no app to install. You use the page, then download the PNG if you want to keep the image.

Does the site store the link I type?

No. The square is drawn on your device. The server sees that a browser asked for this page. It does not receive the contents of the box.

What is the difference between Link and Text?

Link adds https:// when you leave the scheme off, and a phone treats the result as a web address. Text stores the characters exactly. A space is allowed in Text. A space in a link is rejected, because a web address cannot contain one.

Why will a phone not scan the code?

The usual causes are a color that is too light, a picture that was cropped into the square, or a camera held so close that the code does not fit in the frame. Keep the white margin. Print the code large enough that the camera can see the whole square. Test with your own phone.

Can I use the PNG on a sign or a menu?

Yes. The image is yours to put on a poster, a table tent, a product label, or a slide. Scan one real print before you make a stack of them. A screen preview and a glossy print do not always scan the same way.

Does this create a Wi-Fi QR code?

No. This page makes a code for a link or for plain text. It does not build the network-name and password format that joins Wi-Fi.
